This time I share free crochet pattern Lebaran edition which is Amigurumi Ketupat. Yay! It’s categorized as amigurumi food.
Ketupat (in Indonesian and Malay) is a type of dumpling made from rice packed inside a diamond-shape container of woven palm leaf pouch. As the rice cooks, the grains expand to fill the pouch and the rice becomes compressed. This method of cooking gives the ketupat its characteristic form and texture of a rice dumpling.
Besides Indonesia, ketupat is also found in other countries in Southeast Asia, like in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. It has different names in each country, so are the shapes, but the cooking technique is the same.
Ketupat is very closely related to the Muslim Lebaran Idul Fitri (Eid al-Fitr) tradition in Indonesia. The tradition on preparing and consuming ketupat or kupat in Javanese language during lebaran is believed to be introduced by Raden Mas Sahid or Sunan Kalijaga one of Wali Songo (nine Muslim saints) that spread Islam in Java. It is believed that it contains appropriate symbolism; kupat means ngaku lepat or “admitting one’s mistakes” in Javanese language, in accordance to asking for forgiveness tradition during lebaran.
During Lebaran Idul Fitri in Indonesia, ketupat is often served with either opor ayam (chicken in coconut milk), chicken or beef curry, rendang, sambal goreng ati (spicy beef liver), krechek (buffalo or beef skin dish), or sayur labu Siam (chayote soup). In other occasions, the side dishes are more varies. My favourite side dishes to eat with Ketupat are opor ayam and sambal goreng ati.
Well, that’s a little introduction about ketupat that I got from Wikipedia.
The technique to make Amigurumi Ketupat is different from the crochet technique that we usually use. This time we use the entrelac crochet stitch. It looks like knitting, but we use hook to crochet, not knitting needles.
In this post I give step by step free crochet pattern with photos. But if you need printable PDF crochet pattern, you can purchase it in my Shop. PDF crochet pattern also available in Etsy and Ravelry.
I suggest THIS VIDEO if you want to see crochet ketupat video tutorial. It was made by my fellow crocheter, Sari, based on Crochethea crochet pattern. Although she speaks in Indonesian, the steps can be followed easily.
If this is your first time to work with entrelac crochet stitch (or not), I hope you will be smoothly crocheting this traditional food from Indonesia.

NOTES
The dimension of Amigurumi Ketupat that I made is about 6.6 x 6.5 x 3.5 cm.
I used balinese small ply cotton yarn and Tulip hook no 3/0 (2.25 mm hook).
We will make the plane of Ketupat consisting of 30 small squares, with the size of each square is 5 x 5. Squares are made according to its number. After the plane is finished, just sewn up to make 3-dimensional Ketupat. The size of the square can be reduced by reducing the number of chains and rows.
Square 1
Row 1: 7 ch, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yarn over and pull through ch, leaving 2 loops on hook. Insert hook into next ch, yarn over and pull through ch, leaving 3 loops on the hook. Repeat across the chain so that you have 7 loops on the hook. Next step *yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook* 6 times until 1 loop left on the hook.
Row 2: insert hook into vertical post that is made at Row 1, repeat in each vertical post: yarn over and pull through the vertical post, so that you have 6 loops on the hook. Insert hook into 2 loops of the last vertical post to get the 7th loops on the hook. Next step, *yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook* 6 times until 1 loop left on the hook.
Row 3-5: repeat as Row 2.
After Row 5, sl st 6 times in each vertical post, 1 ch, cut yarn. Square 1 is done.

Row 1: in the lower right stitch of Square 1, make 6 ch. Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yarn over and pull through ch, repeat across the chain so that you have 6 loops on the hook, sl st in Row 1 furthest right st of Square 1. You have 6 loops on the hook, *yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook* 5 times until 1 loop left on the hook.
Row 2: insert hook into vertical post that is made at Row 1, repeat in each vertical post: yarn over and pull through the vertical post, so that you have 6 loops on the hook, sl st in Row 2 furthest right st of Square 1. You have 6 loops on the hook, *yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook* 5 times until 1 loop left on the hook.
Row 3-5: repeat as Row 2.
After Row 5, sl st 6 times in each vertical post, sl st in Row 5 furthest right st of Square 1. Continue to work Square 3.
Square 3
Row 1: insert hook into st (not the vertical post) of Square 1, yarn over and pull through the st, repeat across the st so that you have 7 loops on the hook, *yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook* 6 times until 1 loop left on the hook.
Square 3 is done.
To make the remain squares, basically the same as making Square 1-3. So I will not explain in detail the steps one by one, only what is needed.

Thank you so much for the tutorial. Today I was finally able to make it. It was huge because I’m a beginner crocheter. Also since I’m far away from Indonesia, I wasn’t able to get the real ketupat, but this became a lovely addition to my Eid decorations.
