My latest amigurumi free pattern is here on the blog – R. A. Kartini amigurumi. Read below about the short history of R. A. Kartini and how to get the FREE PDF crochet pattern.
This April, activities at home reminded me of a prominent Indonesian national hero from Java, she is R. A. Kartini. Raden Adjeng Kartini (21 April 1879 –17 September 1904), sometimes known as Raden Ayu Kartini, was also a pioneer in the area of education for girls and women’s rights for Indonesians.
In the days of R. A. Kartini, women were not allowed to get a high education, were forced to undergo marriage at a young age, and were only allowed to stay at home to take care of children.
Thanks to R. A. Kartini, up to now Indonesian women have received the same education as men and can work creatively.
Her birth day, 21 April, is declared as Kartini Day to remind Indonesian women that they should participate in “the hegemonic state discourse of development”.
Even though we are in a condition to maintain physical distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and stay at home, we as crocheter (especially Indonesian women crocheter) can still be creative producing beautiful crochet works.
Keep going the great job, folks!

Notes
R. A. Kartini amigurumi is about 16 cm (6.3 inches) tall.
I used small ply bali cotton yarn and Tulip hook no. 2/0 (2 mm hook); embroidery yarn to make flowers with Rose lace hook no. 8 (0.90 mm hook).
R. A. Kartini amigurumi wears kebaya and jarik (sarong) as traditional clothes from Java. Kebaya is a woman’s blouse which is the front is pinned together. Jarik is a long tight skirt from batik fabric.

Attachment instruction
- Sew arms in Round 30 of body.
- Sew jarik to the body and sew jarik in the front.
- Put kebaya on to the doll body.
It might be difficult to make the arms pass through the sleeves. Tie a piece of yarn to the arm, pass it through the sleeve and pull.
- Sew kebaya in the front from Row 17 to Row 5, see picture below.
- Sew or glue hair to the head.
- Sew hair bun to the back of hair.
- Sew flowers in the right side of hair bun.
Yay! It’s done!! \(^o^)/
